Hasn’t Science Disproven the Bible?

Apologetics Road TripThe short answer is “no.”
Science hasn’t “disproven the Bible.”

Still, this question will come at you before you make it too far down the road – and probably a few more times after that!

Nonsense remains nonsense…
Nevertheless, don’t be intimidated: as Oxford University mathematician, Prof John Lennox says, “Nonsense remains nonsense, even when talked by world-famous scientists.” I would add to that, “Nonsense remains nonsense … even when it’s repeated every day in thousands of media outlets.”

It will take strategy, not just facts
Because this particular brand of nonsense is so prevalent, it will not be enough to just trade in facts. You can, for example, present evidence for intelligent design all day long, and a committed materialist naturalist will just keep saying, “Evolution did it.” Or “Nature,” “natural causes,” or the gods of Time and Chance. Such discussions get old fast, and usually degenerate into name-calling contests.

Good news: tons of free, easy-to-understand, ready-to-use tools
So, what can you do instead? Well, it will take more than one post to answer that; truth be told, probably more than one post series. But, the heartening news is that God has raised up smart, talented people who are providing ever-better answers for ordinary people to use. As soon as we get back on the road, we’ll plug some future destinations into our on-board navigation system, and go in search of those resources.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159638395X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=159638395X&linkCode=as2&tag=apologroadtr-20&linkId=RJLFBFDQWLYWXFYS">The Genesis Flood</a><img src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=apologroadtr-20&l=as2&o=1&a=159638395X" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />Let’s try the Institute for Creation Research
But, for today, let’s pull into the parking lot of ICR, the Institute for Creation Research, and see if they are open. Actually, it’s kind of appropriate to start here, because this is where the modern Creationist movement began. In 1961, in response to attacks on the scientific credibility of the Bible, Henry Morris and John Whitcomb published The Genesis Flood – and opened the floodgates for Christian scholars to re-enter the fray.

We’re not staying very long today, but let’s see if there’s anything we can get “To Go.” Hold on a minute while I scan the ICR resource catalog… ah! here’s something – perfect!

Dinosaurs, Fossils, and – fresh blood cells?
Here’s a short, fact-packed video that will at least challenge some well-known Evolutionary claims.

Spoiler alert: If Dino’s really went extinct 60 million years ago, why are we finding soft tissues (like blood cells, hair, and skin) in fossils? Shouldn’t the soft stuff have rotted away long ago?

What if the Earth isn’t billions of years old?
I picked this video to start the conversation because – think about it – the Age of the Earth is THE core issue. Evolution NEEDS billions of years to work with: it’s easier to imagine impossible events if you have lots of chances for them to happen. (Not that it means they actually ever happen – but more about that later.)

So, if no billions of years – the Bible’s explanation of The Beginning is back in the game.

For more engaging 2-minute videos like this, visit ICR’s That’s A Fact site.

Then, let’s pray – because this is about so much more than winning arguments:

Father, Elohim, Creator-God,
You said, on the very first page of the Bible, that “In the Beginning, GOD created the heavens and the earth..” You wanted us to know this, and, even more, you want us to know YOU. Our very life depends on you, and our forever life depends on knowing you.
I pray for every person who reads this post or watches this video. Help them to see the truth, to stand in the truth, and live in it. Create in them new life; life that can never die.
We pray in the precious name of Jesus, the Last Adam who came to bring life, just as the first Adam’s sin brought death into the world. Thank you for sending Him. Amen.

Pick #2a. A Freebie, from Living Waters (38 min)

These are so much fun! Great for kids of all ages! Former atheist professor, Dr Jobe Martin, introduces us to the design features of intriguing animals.

So many things I’d never thought about – so many design problems with such elegantly engineered solutions. Like: Why don’t giraffes get light-headed when they stand up after drinking? How do woodpeckers not shatter their beaks? How can beavers swim straight in a fast-flowing river while dragging a heavy tree branch?

Pick #4. Superior “Intelligent Design” Films: 5-in-1  (approx 65 min each)

“You go where the data leads you…”

DVD 3: PRIVILEGED PLANET “there’s something about the universe that can’t be explained by the impersonal forces of nature..”.

DVD 4: DARWIN’S DILEMMA considers the geologically-sudden appearance of dozens of major complex animal types in the fossil record without any trace of the gradual transitional steps Charles Darwin had predicted.

DVD 5: THE CASE FOR A CREATOR “Today, science is pointing more directly and more powerfully toward a Creator than any other time in the history of the world.” – Lee Strobel, former atheist and investigative journalist, documents his journey to faith as he followed the evidence.

Faith-Defend like a Boss: Contra Fry

Contra Fry: How to effectively defend faith in God {against atheist rants}

Let’s be real: traveling across the landscape of unbelief can be dispiriting.

Apologetics Road TripIt takes endurance to listen to anti-God rants and poor logic; it takes patience to sift through the tangle of assertion, assumption and accusation.

Anyone who’s tried to have a reasonable discussion about Christianity knows this painfully well: fielding the same questions over and over can get old fast. Especially when no one is listening. {Why won’t they see??}

bagpipesI have something today that might help: if you’re feeling a bit jaded or you’re discouraged that a lie “gets halfway round the world before the truth can put its shoes on” (as Spurgeon said back in a pre-internet age, even) – I found this refreshing defense of the faith by Scottish apologist, David Robertson.

He’s not at all impressed with the angry atheist rantings of Stephen Fry’s viral video. My spirit was greatly cheered by Robertson’s unapologetic apologetics – I hope yours will be, too.

Robertson is doing more than taking on the latest challenge to faith: he’s modeling how you and I can do it effectively, too. He speaks with the authority of an ambassador who knows he has the full backing of the King of the Cosmos.

It’s clear from his steady and sober tone that he knows he has a critical message to bring from a holy God to all humans on planet earth. {So do we.} Robertson demonstrates, calmly and confidently, how to deploy the sword of truth to dissect one lie after another. He goes after the faulty logic, ignoring the emotion and rhetoric.

Admittedly, he uses rhetoric of his own – I’d say it’s part of being a skilled apologist – but he still shows concern for the soul of the man who is so proud of his hostility towards the God who made him.

Now, if we could only have pause/play buttons for real time debates…

Check out David Robertson’s website and his gotta-have-them-all books here.

An Atheist’s Story: Chilling Insights

The Landscape of Unbelief: Meet David WoodApologetics Road Trip
I promised at the outset of the Road Trip that we’d try and talk to people who haven’t accepted the claims of Jesus or the Bible: here, atheist David Wood tells his story.

In this video, he chronicles the logical implications of atheism and, chillingly, his journey across the landscape of unbelief.

His life story is extreme; the unbelievers you and I know won’t do the kinds of things Wood did – as he says, “most atheists live normal lives.”  But, as he also says, “why bother?”

Visit David’s ministry website, Acts 17 Apologetics, to hear from a few more atheists and former atheists. He also has general apologetics resources (mainly video) and several posts that focus on either Islam or militant atheism.

Don’t know about you, but I can’t say anything that would add to this story. But I am moved to pray:

Sovereign, Savior God,
We are reminded that you alone are good. We remember that you are our only hope of rescue – and that without you, our lives have no purpose. You are our anchor, our hope, our life. We are reminded that the human race without your grace is horrific and doomed to dark slavery, not glorious freedom. We are also reminded that you are the loving, forgiving, horizon-scanning father of even the worst prodigals.

Thank you that you keep seeking your lost sons and daughters even when we spit in your face, warp your image in us, and turn our backs on you. Help us to remember that none of us can boast that we’re naturally good; that none of us naturally loves or even wants you. Help us to be as relentless as you in setting the captives free, grateful every moment that you have set us free and given us abundant life.

Thank you that Jesus left heaven to come and bring us home. Help us to use our time here to bring many more sons to glory. Amen.

Learn Genesis in 5 minutes!

“The Bible: a profound and very beautiful book…” – Tim Mackie

Apologetics Road Trip

but it’s also:
– a very looong book
– often confusing
– and just intimidating overall

Today’s Road Trip Discovery, The Bible Project, is here to help.

Premium, free, and accessible
The Bible Project is ambitious: the whole Bible broken down into 5-minute animated videos. Exactly the kind of resource we’re on the road to find: premium, 100% free, and engagingly accessible!

An antidote to Bible illiteracy?
Don’t know about you, but I think that if more people knew what the Bible actually said, they would find answers to a lot of their faith questions. We live in a time of extreme Bible illiteracy – and any resources that can turn that around are worth getting excited about.

Talented team
Speaking of which – I’m excited to introduce you today to Tim Mackie, and the rest of the highly qualified, talented creatives of The Bible Project team, Jon CollinsGerry Breshears and (just joined) Jason Brubaker. See the quality of their work for yourself in this animated walk-through of Genesis 1 to 11:

I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did – can’t wait to see the rest of the series! Well, actually – let’s not wait: here’s one more. This one gives an overview of the whole Bible, a walk through of the Messiah from Genesis to Revelation:

Is the Bible really that big of a deal?
In today’s Biblically illiterate world, people not only don’t know the content, but they generally don’t know how the human race came to have the Bible, or its unsurpassed role in history. The Bible makes some extraordinary claims – the most amazing of which is that it claims to be alive!

Bronze Age script? World’s Best-selling Book?
Before we get back on the road (or sneak off to watch more of The Bible Project’s animations), there’s time for just one fact that might suggest there’s something special about the Bible. On its own, it doesn’t prove all that much, but it can’t just be swept aside either. Here it is:

“Although it’s impossible to obtain exact figures, there is little doubt that the Bible is the world’s best-selling and most widely distributed book.”- The Guinness Book of Records.  Some years ago, Russell Ash’s Top 10 of Everything List said that 6 Billion Bibles had been printed – at least six times more than the book in the #2 spot.

Unsurprisingly, skeptics have disputed these numbers or said, “So what?” No time to debate them today, but, down the road, we’ll revisit the issue. I’ll do my best to find the very best answers to questions about the Bible and its unmatched position in human history and in the hearts of millions.

The Bible and you
What about you? What’s your relationship to the Bible – is it a book you love or do you find it strange, difficult or dry? I’d love to hear from you if you can recommend resources that showcase the uniqueness of the Bible. And please let me know what questions the Road Trip should find answers for, either for yourself or people you know!

“A man can’t be always defending the truth; there must be a time to feed on it.”
– C.S. Lewis

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for giving the world this amazing, precious treasure. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about yourself, about how you made the world and what’s going to happen to it. Thank you for explaining to us why it is the way it is – and how to live in in. Thank you for preserving these ancient words to give us hope and life. Thank you, most of all, for showing us in its pages the secret of eternal life and the way to heaven. And thank you for writing so many times that you love us.

We pray for the people who’ve given their lives to guard and distribute the Bible, and for the people around the world today who risk their lives just to read it or teach it. We pray for that special group of men and women who are racing against time to translate the Scriptures into the heart language of people groups and tribes still waiting for the Good News. And, Father, for ourselves, we pray that you’d help us to desire the pure milk of your Word so that we can grow, and then the bread and meat of your Word so that we can become mature. We ask in the name of your Son, Jesus, the Living Word who was with You in the beginning. Amen.

Thanks for visiting! If this is your first time, the About & Welcome page will quickly bring you up to speed; search & navigation tips are here, and the Trip Log  is a hyperlinked list of all the posts from Day One. “God is Love”: a uniquely Christian Idea

Where does the Idea of a Loving God come from?heart

@apoloJTXroad #7

Not everybody believes in God, but, according to Tim Keller, most people agree that if there is a God, he’s a god of love.

But, – where does this idea come from?

[Tim Keller pastors a church of sophisticated urban professionals in Manhattan, and he wrote the NY Times bestsellers, The Reason for God and Prodigal God.]

In an archived sermon on Psalm 107, Keller examines 3 possible sources for the concept of a loving God:

auidio cd

1. the idea comes from history, from ancient times
2. the idea is common to all religions
3. the idea is drawn from observations of Nature

Spoiler alert: none of these proposed sources prove to be correct:

1. In ancient times, “gods” were seen to be fearful, capricious beings
2. In all religions but one, the idea of a benevolent deity with whom ordinary people can have a personal, loving relationship is absurd, unheard of, even sacrilegious
3. Nature is not all beauty and love – close observation. in fact, reveals disturbing, even horrific aspects

We know “God is love” by Revelation
So, if the original idea of a loving God is not found in human history, world religions, or the natural world – how has it come into human consciousness? wsnaccad-moses-and-the-burning-bush-chibi-versionIt turns out that the answer is “by revelation.”

As Psalm 107 explains, God has revealed his love to us by his deeds and his words about his own character.  These are written revelations in a collection of 66 books, collectively known as The Bible.

“God is love” must be understood in context
Keller explains in his Psalm 107 apologetic that God’s love only makes sense inside the framework of Creation, Fall, Redemption. For an explanation of how that works, access this talk in his extensive, free sermon archive.

God and his love are complex
Keller’s last main point is that God is a complex character in the literary sense. He is at once Father, King, Lover, and Friend. Of course such a being is impossible to fit into our minds, so we tend to reshape him into a more manageable “god.” HolyCommunion

But this caricature doesn’t exist – and if we waste time looking for it, we will never encounter the true God of Love. We will remain alone and untransformed.

{In your deep heart}, are you looking for a loving God?
If, deep down, you’re looking for a loving God, Keller points out, as kindly as he can, “You can’t find [him] by communing with your own heart or with nature.”

Oxytocin & Survival of the Fittest
A short post-script: naturalistic Evolution, having no room for God, and eager to offer a biological basis for human love, says it (love) is the product of chemicals and the instinct to preserve the species.

Try the Bible. It really does make a lot more sense.

I love you heart

3 Apologetics Tools for Little Kids

Are there any good Apologetics Tools for Little Kids?

Are little kids too young to defend their faith? At what age can they be taught the principles of logic, theology, or the reasons for faith?

There are 3 resources that I’m eager to share at this stop: you can see them for yourself right away by clicking these links:        … or…

#1. A Christian Mom shares 14 Ways she Teaches Apologetics to her 5-year olds
#2. Apologetics Books for Kids: the Young Defenders Series
#3. Browse a List of over 100 Apologetics Resources for 2-yr olds to Teens

…or, read on for a brief description before you decide.

But, first, real quick: two stories about the “too young” issue and some disturbing facts about the theological challenges of contemporary kidhood :

4 year olds: Astute Theologians
A very short story to illustrate that kids already engage in theological discussion – and I’m sure you can add more of the same. Some years ago, my sister-in-love took my then 4 year old nephew with her to deliver food to a homeless shelter.

Kids-Wagon“This is why we need to thank Jesus that we have a nice home,” she told him.

“But why doesn’t Jesus give them a nice home?”

And, then to add some urgency to the task of Christian parents, a disconcerting Road Trip discovery:

Atheists are targeting little (and big) kids
Are little kids too young to understand big ideas about God, reality, justice, right and wrong, and logic? The American Humanist Association doesn’t think so. Their website, Kids Without God, is “for the millions of young people around the world who have embraced science, rejected superstition, and are dedicated to being Good Without A God!”

[Hope some smart little kid asks them how to define “good” in the absence of a supreme moral being.]

Kids need apologetics NOW – not later
Sarah Flashing of Women in Apologetics points out that it’s no longer enough to prepare
addon-bucket-and-spade-2children for the world they’ll encounter when they leave home: the world isn’t waiting.

We all know that culture and media are saturated with values that are antithetical to Biblical Christianity and little people are absorbing these ideas through many channels. It’s just still shocking how soon this onslaught starts.

It’s not really possible to hide, probably not even if you ban everything with a screen in your home. But we can equip the next generation with a good defense and, better yet, an effective offense. So, without any more delay, here are three of my newest favorite tools to put in the hands of parents and teachers (and aunts, uncles, grandparents, and big sibs).

#1. A Christian Mom shares 14 Ways she Teaches Apologetics to her 5-year olds

Natasha Crain shows you how to give kids the basic building blocks for apologetics and clear thinking. Children can be taught to think about the reasons for their faith, to know that there are reasons, and to know that the answers are often complex in the real world. From this list of 14 strategies, I’ve selected two to show you, but you can drop by her site for the rest, and for plenty more quality content.

The family read through the World Vision Children’s Bible and discussed its true stories of global suffering caused by the two types of evil (natural – as in natural disasters) and moral (seen in wars and abuses of power).

Over time, the children realized that the problem of evil is not quickly solved – but they were learning how to think it through and search out God’s perspective rather than pretend it doesn’t exist.

#2. Kids’ Question Night
The family has one night of the week where there is no Bible story or lesson planned for family devotions. Instead, they discuss whatever questions the children have. Because this is where kids already have questions, this is probably the best place to start – not to mention the value of communicating to children that their questions matter and are important to their parents.

owl-family#2. Apologetics Books for Kids: the Young Defenders Series
There are currently two books in this illustrated series:
How Do We Know God is Really There?
How Do We Know God Created Life?
third bookHow Do We Know Jesus is Alive? is due out by spring, 2015.

Melissa Cain Travis of Hard-Core Christianity is the talented and well-qualified author, and the engaging illustrations are by Christopher Voss. There aren’t a whole lot of reviews on Amazon yet, but the consensus seems to be that the theology is very sound and explained in a way that little kids will understand and enjoy.

#3. Browse a List of over 100 Apologetics Resources for 2-yr olds to Teens

The International  Society of Women in Apologetics has compiled a comprehensive list of trusted resources, organized by age categories. This has all the classics and includes books, websites, multimedia, and curricula.

Access the full list here.

More later…
There are way more than three great resources for kids out there, but that’s all we have time for today. Before I head back down the road in search of more premium, free, and accessible resources, I’d like to pray for the children of this generation all over the world:

Good Shepherd,
We know that you care particularly for the littlest of the lambs in your kingdom. Help us to take good care of them for you, and, when we fail, please send your angels to keep them in all their ways. Thank you that you watch over them personally, and that you can lead them and comfort them when we cannot. We pray for the little people we know, and for the ones that, seemingly, nobody knows. There are children who are unknown and unloved, and our hearts break for them – help them to know that they are not forgotten by you. Send them whispers of your love. And, Father, we pray that you would raise up mighty-spirited children in this next generation who would love you with pure and strong hearts. We pray that many more tools for truth would be created by your people, and that all young people, in all lands, would have the opportunity to hear the truth. We pray that many millions would come to you and be adopted into your forever family. Thank you, Jesus – we know that you would not have the little ones sent away, but that you would have them come, and be blessed. Amen.

5 Steps to Resolving “Bible Errors” with Confidence

Got 3 minutes? Learn how to Easily Debunk the “Errors in the Bible” Myth!

In his lightning-quick, 3-minute video, packed with memorable and funny one-liners, Carl Kerby, founder of Reasons for Hope, teaches a simple way to check so-called “errors” in the Bible.

The method will work for any alleged Bible errors and will definitely build your confidence in handling these kinds of conversations.

Kerby’s “SiMPLe-C” (SMPL-C) is a mnemonic for the typical things that cause “errors.” I’ve put it here in print as a take-home when for you’re done watching the video. It’s new to me, and I really like it because it’s a simple way to remember the 5 steps to take when you’re in the middle of talking about the Bible with a skeptical friend. (Otherwise, it’s easy to forget something.) Here are the steps:

S – Spelling
M – Mistranslation
P – Perspective
L- Literal vs Figurative

C – Context

The video is part of Kerby’s, mythbusting series, deBunked. You can purchase videos like this at Reasons for Hope or book one of their speakers for your event. The deBunked series addresses some of the most common myths about Christianity and the Bible. The current listing is: There’s No Evidence for God, God Doesn’t Mean What He Says, The Bible is Unreliable Because It’s Full of Errors, I Can Have Real Hope Without God, As a Christian, I Don’t Need to Talk About Jesus, All Those Creatures Couldn’t Have Fit on Noah’s Ark, I Need to Earn My Salvation.

Carl and his team are doing some innovative stuff and are having a great impact on young people across the country. I’d like to pray for their ministry – that it would reach across the whole world to help young people all over the globe.

Because Jesus said that our agreement in prayer is powerful – would you agree with me in prayer on behalf of Reasons for Hope?

Father, thank you for the ministry of Reasons for Hope. Thanks for providing the means and for inspiring the creative ideas here. Thanks for giving Carl Kerby the vision, the knowledge, and the passion to do this. We know he does it because he loves you, and because he loves young people. We pray that you’d protect him, prosper him, and allow many, many lives to be changed through this work. Thank you, that because of Jesus, we do have reasons for Hope! And thank you for giving us the Bible to lead us to you and to our home in heaven. Amen!
