One-Stop Apologetics: Visit these 6 Supersites today!

LocationBookmarksSTART HERE: Apologetics Supersites to Visit – and Bookmark

Want a fast track to finding faith-defending resources and practical help?

Here’s a list of a few great places to start. The first three sites, especially, will quickly bring you up to speed in two ways:

1. They feature the best answers for our times to all the main objections to Christianity, and

2. They analyze current events from a Biblical perspective to help you formulate well-thought out answers to challenges from secular society.

#1. The Poached Egg Greg West

This site is HUGE! It’s also continually updated with content from all over the internet. (Which leads me to a quick disclaimer – I don’t personally endorse every source linked to from the Poached Egg. Nevertheless, you’ll find plenty of excellent content of all kinds here.)

In the words of founder, Greg West: there is almost nothing this blog does not cover in terms of apologetics resources. (He’s right.) You’ll come away with something good every time you visit!

The Poached Egg is a Christian Worldview and Apologetics Journal, a huge, continually expanding virtual library of articles and essays compiled from all over Internet. The site derives its name from a famous C.S. Lewis quote in Mere Christianity in which Lewis said that a man who claimed to be God {but wasn’t} would be on a level with a man who said he was a poached egg.

I’d highly recommend following The Poached Egg on Twitter (@ThePoachedEgg), Facebook, or subscribing to the daily email digest or the monthly e-newsletter.

And the site’s YouTube Featured Channels is a fantastic gateway to the the best video content on multiple apologetics sites

#2. Apologetics 315 Brian Auten

An equally HUGE site, updated daily. Founded by Brian Auten in 2007, Apologetics 315 is “an accessible and growing repository of educational resources for the defense of the Christian faith.”

Another goal of the site is to serve as a means of networking within the apologetics community. To that end, Brian maintains a Directory of Christian Apologetics Blogs which you can access here.

There is way too much on this well-developed site to mention here, so I recommend that you check it out for yourself. Here are some highlights:

Interviews with 150 Christian apologists
– The 16 best Apologetics Podcasts and the Ultimate Apologetics mp3 Audio Page
– 12 free Apologetics Powerpoint Presentations
you can use!

#3. Cold Case Christianity J. Warner Wallace, “The Evidence Whisperer

This is a very active site, filled with fresh content several times a week. Content includes articles, video, podcasts, radio, and even TV broadcasts.

Former atheist and career homicide detective, J. Warner Wallace is absolutely passionate about what he terms Christian Case-Making. His passion is contagious and his resources are sharp and highly relevant for right now.

It’s worth following him on Twitter because he reads and scans 400 apologetics blogs every day and posts links to the best evidential articles – essentially a Christian “Drudge Report(News aggregation site run by Matt Drudge.).

A highlight is the development of innovative apologetics tools and practical tips for engaging skeptics.  For example, this post helps you see where someone who rejects Christianity is coming from so that you can better reach them with the truth. Another very useful and free resource is the Monthly Bible Insert which you can download here

#4. Probe.org

Probe has been answering apologetics questions for 40 years, and has amassed over 1,800 articles. The staff will also respond to emailed questions in the unlikely event the answer cannot be found in their database.

Probe is also featured on several radio stations and you can listen online or download mp3s of past broadcasts here.

A freebie on the site is a collection of downloadable Powerpoint presentations that you can access here. Topics include Christian Evidences, Bible Reliabily, Current Issues, and resources for children and teens.

#5. Truthbomb Apologetics   Faith Christian Fellowship Williamsport, Maryland

Not as huge as the Supersites, but a good collection of apologetics resources, mostly articles and some video. Founded in 2007, some highlghts are:

The Apologetics Arsenal – links to apologetics questions, organized alphabetically.
-The Free Apologetics e-Book library – great collection. Topics include apologetics, Christian living, logic, and philosophy.

Follow the site on twitter at @TBapologetics.

#6. The Christian Apologetics Alliance

Short, well-written blog posts on every conceivable apologetics topic. Go here for a full list of blog post categories on this site.

The CAA has an active social media presence (for one, a Facebook community of nearly 2,500 apologists where issues of the day and various apologetics issues are robustly debated).

Another feature is the free quarterly magazine, “Equipped”
Launched October, 2014. Themes of the first three volumes are, respectively, Evidence for the Existence of God, Evidence for the Existence of Jesus, and Evidence for the Resurrection.

(Note: For some reason, you’ll need to click on the title of each volume until you download the pdf. The first time you click on the title, it may take you to a screen that looks identical – just persevere and click on the title in the new screen.)

I’m so grateful for the gifted and passionate faith-defenders God has given to us in our times! I hope you will be encouraged and equipped by the resources they have developed.

Before we move on, I’d like to pray for these dedicated men and women – and for you:

Father, thank you for the men and women who love you and your people enough to do the hard work of contending for the truth. Thank you for their sacrifices of time and resources to make these materials available to the Church.

We ask that you would prosper them, protect them, and encourage them. Please give pray silhoette sitthem creative ideas for resources that can be used by ordinary people, give them favor with people both inside and outside the Church, and help them to be very discerning as they study and teach the truth.

Thank you so much that there IS truth, and that you’ve revealed it to us. Thank you that we have some firm ground to stand on in the midst of turbulent, uncertain times.

Father, I pray for myself and for the visitors to these sites: that our hearts and minds would be changed and strengthened by encountering truth and, especially, Truth in the form of your son, Jesus. I pray that you would make him precious to us as he is to you, and as we are to you.

I pray that we would know the truth more and more, and that it would keep setting us free until we are fully conformed to the image of Jesus. Thank you for this glorious hope!

Hasn’t Science Disproven the Bible?

Apologetics Road TripThe short answer is “no.”
Science hasn’t “disproven the Bible.”

Still, this question will come at you before you make it too far down the road – and probably a few more times after that!

Nonsense remains nonsense…
Nevertheless, don’t be intimidated: as Oxford University mathematician, Prof John Lennox says, “Nonsense remains nonsense, even when talked by world-famous scientists.” I would add to that, “Nonsense remains nonsense … even when it’s repeated every day in thousands of media outlets.”

It will take strategy, not just facts
Because this particular brand of nonsense is so prevalent, it will not be enough to just trade in facts. You can, for example, present evidence for intelligent design all day long, and a committed materialist naturalist will just keep saying, “Evolution did it.” Or “Nature,” “natural causes,” or the gods of Time and Chance. Such discussions get old fast, and usually degenerate into name-calling contests.

Good news: tons of free, easy-to-understand, ready-to-use tools
So, what can you do instead? Well, it will take more than one post to answer that; truth be told, probably more than one post series. But, the heartening news is that God has raised up smart, talented people who are providing ever-better answers for ordinary people to use. As soon as we get back on the road, we’ll plug some future destinations into our on-board navigation system, and go in search of those resources.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159638395X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=159638395X&linkCode=as2&tag=apologroadtr-20&linkId=RJLFBFDQWLYWXFYS">The Genesis Flood</a><img src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=apologroadtr-20&l=as2&o=1&a=159638395X" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />Let’s try the Institute for Creation Research
But, for today, let’s pull into the parking lot of ICR, the Institute for Creation Research, and see if they are open. Actually, it’s kind of appropriate to start here, because this is where the modern Creationist movement began. In 1961, in response to attacks on the scientific credibility of the Bible, Henry Morris and John Whitcomb published The Genesis Flood – and opened the floodgates for Christian scholars to re-enter the fray.

We’re not staying very long today, but let’s see if there’s anything we can get “To Go.” Hold on a minute while I scan the ICR resource catalog… ah! here’s something – perfect!

Dinosaurs, Fossils, and – fresh blood cells?
Here’s a short, fact-packed video that will at least challenge some well-known Evolutionary claims.

Spoiler alert: If Dino’s really went extinct 60 million years ago, why are we finding soft tissues (like blood cells, hair, and skin) in fossils? Shouldn’t the soft stuff have rotted away long ago?

What if the Earth isn’t billions of years old?
I picked this video to start the conversation because – think about it – the Age of the Earth is THE core issue. Evolution NEEDS billions of years to work with: it’s easier to imagine impossible events if you have lots of chances for them to happen. (Not that it means they actually ever happen – but more about that later.)

So, if no billions of years – the Bible’s explanation of The Beginning is back in the game.

For more engaging 2-minute videos like this, visit ICR’s That’s A Fact site.

Then, let’s pray – because this is about so much more than winning arguments:

Father, Elohim, Creator-God,
You said, on the very first page of the Bible, that “In the Beginning, GOD created the heavens and the earth..” You wanted us to know this, and, even more, you want us to know YOU. Our very life depends on you, and our forever life depends on knowing you.
I pray for every person who reads this post or watches this video. Help them to see the truth, to stand in the truth, and live in it. Create in them new life; life that can never die.
We pray in the precious name of Jesus, the Last Adam who came to bring life, just as the first Adam’s sin brought death into the world. Thank you for sending Him. Amen.

Faith-Defend like a Boss: Contra Fry

Contra Fry: How to effectively defend faith in God {against atheist rants}

Let’s be real: traveling across the landscape of unbelief can be dispiriting.

Apologetics Road TripIt takes endurance to listen to anti-God rants and poor logic; it takes patience to sift through the tangle of assertion, assumption and accusation.

Anyone who’s tried to have a reasonable discussion about Christianity knows this painfully well: fielding the same questions over and over can get old fast. Especially when no one is listening. {Why won’t they see??}

bagpipesI have something today that might help: if you’re feeling a bit jaded or you’re discouraged that a lie “gets halfway round the world before the truth can put its shoes on” (as Spurgeon said back in a pre-internet age, even) – I found this refreshing defense of the faith by Scottish apologist, David Robertson.

He’s not at all impressed with the angry atheist rantings of Stephen Fry’s viral video. My spirit was greatly cheered by Robertson’s unapologetic apologetics – I hope yours will be, too.

Robertson is doing more than taking on the latest challenge to faith: he’s modeling how you and I can do it effectively, too. He speaks with the authority of an ambassador who knows he has the full backing of the King of the Cosmos.

It’s clear from his steady and sober tone that he knows he has a critical message to bring from a holy God to all humans on planet earth. {So do we.} Robertson demonstrates, calmly and confidently, how to deploy the sword of truth to dissect one lie after another. He goes after the faulty logic, ignoring the emotion and rhetoric.

Admittedly, he uses rhetoric of his own – I’d say it’s part of being a skilled apologist – but he still shows concern for the soul of the man who is so proud of his hostility towards the God who made him.

Now, if we could only have pause/play buttons for real time debates…

Check out David Robertson’s website and his gotta-have-them-all books here.

An Atheist’s Story: Chilling Insights

The Landscape of Unbelief: Meet David WoodApologetics Road Trip
I promised at the outset of the Road Trip that we’d try and talk to people who haven’t accepted the claims of Jesus or the Bible: here, atheist David Wood tells his story.

In this video, he chronicles the logical implications of atheism and, chillingly, his journey across the landscape of unbelief.

His life story is extreme; the unbelievers you and I know won’t do the kinds of things Wood did – as he says, “most atheists live normal lives.”  But, as he also says, “why bother?”

Visit David’s ministry website, Acts 17 Apologetics, to hear from a few more atheists and former atheists. He also has general apologetics resources (mainly video) and several posts that focus on either Islam or militant atheism.

Don’t know about you, but I can’t say anything that would add to this story. But I am moved to pray:

Sovereign, Savior God,
We are reminded that you alone are good. We remember that you are our only hope of rescue – and that without you, our lives have no purpose. You are our anchor, our hope, our life. We are reminded that the human race without your grace is horrific and doomed to dark slavery, not glorious freedom. We are also reminded that you are the loving, forgiving, horizon-scanning father of even the worst prodigals.

Thank you that you keep seeking your lost sons and daughters even when we spit in your face, warp your image in us, and turn our backs on you. Help us to remember that none of us can boast that we’re naturally good; that none of us naturally loves or even wants you. Help us to be as relentless as you in setting the captives free, grateful every moment that you have set us free and given us abundant life.

Thank you that Jesus left heaven to come and bring us home. Help us to use our time here to bring many more sons to glory. Amen.

Learn Genesis in 5 minutes!

“The Bible: a profound and very beautiful book…” – Tim Mackie

Apologetics Road Trip

but it’s also:
– a very looong book
– often confusing
– and just intimidating overall

Today’s Road Trip Discovery, The Bible Project, is here to help.

Premium, free, and accessible
The Bible Project is ambitious: the whole Bible broken down into 5-minute animated videos. Exactly the kind of resource we’re on the road to find: premium, 100% free, and engagingly accessible!

An antidote to Bible illiteracy?
Don’t know about you, but I think that if more people knew what the Bible actually said, they would find answers to a lot of their faith questions. We live in a time of extreme Bible illiteracy – and any resources that can turn that around are worth getting excited about.

Talented team
Speaking of which – I’m excited to introduce you today to Tim Mackie, and the rest of the highly qualified, talented creatives of The Bible Project team, Jon CollinsGerry Breshears and (just joined) Jason Brubaker. See the quality of their work for yourself in this animated walk-through of Genesis 1 to 11:

I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did – can’t wait to see the rest of the series! Well, actually – let’s not wait: here’s one more. This one gives an overview of the whole Bible, a walk through of the Messiah from Genesis to Revelation:

Is the Bible really that big of a deal?
In today’s Biblically illiterate world, people not only don’t know the content, but they generally don’t know how the human race came to have the Bible, or its unsurpassed role in history. The Bible makes some extraordinary claims – the most amazing of which is that it claims to be alive!

Bronze Age script? World’s Best-selling Book?
Before we get back on the road (or sneak off to watch more of The Bible Project’s animations), there’s time for just one fact that might suggest there’s something special about the Bible. On its own, it doesn’t prove all that much, but it can’t just be swept aside either. Here it is:

“Although it’s impossible to obtain exact figures, there is little doubt that the Bible is the world’s best-selling and most widely distributed book.”- The Guinness Book of Records.  Some years ago, Russell Ash’s Top 10 of Everything List said that 6 Billion Bibles had been printed – at least six times more than the book in the #2 spot.

Unsurprisingly, skeptics have disputed these numbers or said, “So what?” No time to debate them today, but, down the road, we’ll revisit the issue. I’ll do my best to find the very best answers to questions about the Bible and its unmatched position in human history and in the hearts of millions.

The Bible and you
What about you? What’s your relationship to the Bible – is it a book you love or do you find it strange, difficult or dry? I’d love to hear from you if you can recommend resources that showcase the uniqueness of the Bible. And please let me know what questions the Road Trip should find answers for, either for yourself or people you know!

“A man can’t be always defending the truth; there must be a time to feed on it.”
– C.S. Lewis

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for giving the world this amazing, precious treasure. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about yourself, about how you made the world and what’s going to happen to it. Thank you for explaining to us why it is the way it is – and how to live in in. Thank you for preserving these ancient words to give us hope and life. Thank you, most of all, for showing us in its pages the secret of eternal life and the way to heaven. And thank you for writing so many times that you love us.

We pray for the people who’ve given their lives to guard and distribute the Bible, and for the people around the world today who risk their lives just to read it or teach it. We pray for that special group of men and women who are racing against time to translate the Scriptures into the heart language of people groups and tribes still waiting for the Good News. And, Father, for ourselves, we pray that you’d help us to desire the pure milk of your Word so that we can grow, and then the bread and meat of your Word so that we can become mature. We ask in the name of your Son, Jesus, the Living Word who was with You in the beginning. Amen.

5 Steps to Resolving “Bible Errors” with Confidence

Got 3 minutes? Learn how to Easily Debunk the “Errors in the Bible” Myth!

In his lightning-quick, 3-minute video, packed with memorable and funny one-liners, Carl Kerby, founder of Reasons for Hope, teaches a simple way to check so-called “errors” in the Bible.

The method will work for any alleged Bible errors and will definitely build your confidence in handling these kinds of conversations.

Kerby’s “SiMPLe-C” (SMPL-C) is a mnemonic for the typical things that cause “errors.” I’ve put it here in print as a take-home when for you’re done watching the video. It’s new to me, and I really like it because it’s a simple way to remember the 5 steps to take when you’re in the middle of talking about the Bible with a skeptical friend. (Otherwise, it’s easy to forget something.) Here are the steps:

S – Spelling
M – Mistranslation
P – Perspective
L- Literal vs Figurative

C – Context

The video is part of Kerby’s, mythbusting series, deBunked. You can purchase videos like this at Reasons for Hope or book one of their speakers for your event. The deBunked series addresses some of the most common myths about Christianity and the Bible. The current listing is: There’s No Evidence for God, God Doesn’t Mean What He Says, The Bible is Unreliable Because It’s Full of Errors, I Can Have Real Hope Without God, As a Christian, I Don’t Need to Talk About Jesus, All Those Creatures Couldn’t Have Fit on Noah’s Ark, I Need to Earn My Salvation.

Carl and his team are doing some innovative stuff and are having a great impact on young people across the country. I’d like to pray for their ministry – that it would reach across the whole world to help young people all over the globe.

Because Jesus said that our agreement in prayer is powerful – would you agree with me in prayer on behalf of Reasons for Hope?

Father, thank you for the ministry of Reasons for Hope. Thanks for providing the means and for inspiring the creative ideas here. Thanks for giving Carl Kerby the vision, the knowledge, and the passion to do this. We know he does it because he loves you, and because he loves young people. We pray that you’d protect him, prosper him, and allow many, many lives to be changed through this work. Thank you, that because of Jesus, we do have reasons for Hope! And thank you for giving us the Bible to lead us to you and to our home in heaven. Amen!

The Problem of Evil: Alvin Plantinga’s argument & Ravi Z’s thoughts

apoloJTXroad STOP#3

Meet The World’s Most Important Living Christian Philosopher
A quick trivia question before we arrive at today’s stop: Who is the world’s most important living Christian philosopher, named “America’s leading orthodox Protestant philosopher of God” by none other than TIME magazine?

“Alvin Plantinga!”
– you’re absolutely right! Well, I hate to admit it, but I didn’t know either. No matter – today, we’re going to see his philosophical brilliance in this animation of a brand new, original, and pretty clever answer to the age-old question, “How can there be a God with all the evil in the world?”

(You might want to turn your speakers down for this one; seems to be set a bit loud.)

No? Well, try this easier-to-digest argument
If you found that a bit difficult to follow or would have trouble reproducing it, try the distilled wisdom of Ravi Zacharias. He answers the same question in a very digestible way, explaining, basically, that automatons can’t “love” and that true love necessarily comes with the freedom to “not love.” He makes some other good points, like:

1. If we humans take a life, that’s tragic and we can’t restore it. But if God takes a life, he can restore it.
2. If there’s no eternity, the problem of evil remains unsolved…

A philosophical understanding of the problem of evil is one thing – but, thankfully, God has given us more than logic to deal with it. The world we live in seems to grow almost daily more evil, more cruel, and more violent. But God has equipped us to live in it as his agents, and he has given us amazingly powerful protection from and authority over evil in the form of something that does not always feel very powerful at all: the power of prayer.

Good Father,
We admit, first of all, that the evil in the world is not always “out there.” Sometimes, it’s in our own hearts, thoughts, and words. We also admit that, if we seem less evil than people we read about in the newspapers, it’s only your grace that has kept us from our full potential for doing wrong. We pray for all those suffering from the evil actions of people who’ve misused their freedom to do wrong. Please comfort and rescue them; be near to them in ways that nobody else can.

We pray for your protection for those who are most vulnerable, and for our brothers and sisters who are persecuted for being your followers. Dearest Father, give your children supernatural hope, peace, and joy to sustain them. We know that you can work all things for good; nevertheless, we are very time-bound and earth-bound. We thank you that you remember that and pity us. (Psalm 103:13)

Thank you, too, that you have done something about evil – first, that there will one day be ultimate justice for all the wrongs in the world. And, second, that in the lives of believers there will be mercy instead of justice because your son, Jesus, has paid the full price for all the times we have chosen evil instead of good.
We pray in the powerful name of Jesus, who came to earth to destroy the works of the devil. AMEN.

Bonus Post: Right & Wrong and God by CS Lewis

apoloJTXroad STOP#2B

Well, it’s time to get back on the road to track down more of the very best answers to questions about Christianity, Jesus, and the Bible, but if you want to linger a little longer, here’s another of those wonderful Youtube Doodles.

“Right and wrong” are just social conditioning…

This time, CS Lewis takes on objections to his Moral Law argument. He discusses the kinds of things you probably hear from your friends all the time: like “right and wrong” are just social conditioning or survival traits that evolved naturally. Lewis disagrees (and shows you how):

(If you didn’t catch the earlier post with Kingsley’s Doodle of the very first Mere Christianity radio broadcast during wartime England, you can find it at this link. (Thanks, Kalman! We’ll definitely be seeing you again.))

And then, don’t go just yet, because, here, just for fun, is an original recording of CS Lewis answering the objection, “How can God listen to a million prayers at once?

I found the video over at apologetics315 – which is definitely a place to visit soon!

Speaking of prayer, let’s do that right now:
Dear Father of Jesus, we’re so glad that you can hear a million prayers at once! We’re especially glad that you can hear our prayers. So, right now, we bring to you our thanks, our worries, our deep hurts and sorrows, our difficult decisions, our loneliness, and our questions. I pray for the friend reading this. I hope they know you as the best friend that ever was, and is. I pray that you would meet their needs. Thank you, Father – we know you have heard us. Amen.
